‘Twas the night before…

‘Twas the night before… Ramadan, when all through the house,

Everyone was ingesting all food in sight, even uncooked broccoli sprouts,

The sweets decorated the fridge shelves with care,

In hopes tomorrow “Magherb” will hastily be there.

Families devout, for 29 days this time they said,

Religiously following their television sets,

And mamma will be in the kitchen, and I’ll be in bed,

Sleeping while fasting… you know, just resting my head.

When out of my window arose a clatter,

Oops that’s blasphemy; I meant prayer call in regards to this matter,

Away to the fridge I flew like a flash,

Tore open the milk, yogurt, water, rice, chicken, meat, and an entire village’s food stash.

The moon on the breast of the night hanging low,

It seems to fly by while the daytime was too slow,

When, to my wondering eyes should appear,

A Ramadan Television show, how it relates to a holy month is not totally clear.

With a little overacting-underdressed-too-much-makeup- unknown starlet, so lively and quick,

I knew in a moment, I’m going to be sick,

More rapid than eagles the images and songs they came,

While the prayers and prayer calls called out God’s name.

As dry as leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,

When met with hypocrisy I turned off the TV… and went for more pie,

So to my room where time flew,

With my PlayStation3, a carton of cigarettes, and more munchies too.

This is the reality for most of us these days,

When right before Ramadan,

To Dubai or Beirut you flew away,

And right after it you will be there for an extended stay.
